Olga de Amaral exhibition at the Cartier Foundation until 16th March 2025

The Cartier Foundation close to our hotels has just opened the first large-scale European retrospective of Colombian artist Olga de Amaral, whose sculptural creations made of different hand-painted yarns are fascinating.

Now 92 years old, Olga de Amaral is the subject of this large new exhibition in Paris, with 80 pieces of her magical ‘fibre art‘ on show, many of which have never been seen outside of Colombia.

Since the 1960s, the artist’s yarn constructions (and other using gold leaf) have made their impression in contemporary art. These often brightly-coloured volumes are also vaporous, in 3D but puzzlingly empty. Forms to be contemplated…

Although she is well known and respected outside her own country, de Amaral’s work is rarely shown in Europe. The exhibition at the Cartier Foundation gives a new and career-spanning view of her artworks, ordered by theme rather than strictly chronologically.

You’ll see both her sculptures in yarn (linen fibre, horse hair, cotton…) as well as her gold leaf creations that transform fabric into hard, iridescent forms.

The exhibition’s presentation has been conceived by Franco-Lebanese architect Lina Ghotmeh.
