Painter Lisa Shoefer travels across Europe creating large-format paintings of buildings essential to our democracy.

You can admire her work for free – but for only for ten days 😬 – in the wonderful setting of the Luxembourg Garden’s Orangerie, just a few minutes away from our hotels…

Born in Canada, Lisa Schoefer grew up in Germany and went on to study art in Paris. Her series Symbols of Democracy was started around the time of the Brexit negotiations.

She says that she believes democracy is threatened around the world, and her paintings aim to spotlight important democratic strongholds including the European parliament in Strasbourg, the governmental quarter of Berlin and the Quirinal Palace in Rome.

The National Assembly and Senate in Paris are also featured in her series, so it’s more than serendipitous that her exhibition of paintings is being held in the Orangery of the Luxembourg Garden, both of which are managed by the Senate.

The exhibition, which runs for just over ten days, is the final event of the Luxembourg Gardens’ summer line-up of cultural events (which we told you all about here).

However, with the end of the summer programme comes the beginning of the following season’s events, notably the new exhibition of photos on the railings of the garden (also free to see) which starts 21st September 2024 and will be visible for four months 🙂
