Yabaï Sando restaurant, Paris

Summer is here and the parks of Paris (like the Parc Georges Brassens) are the place to be… It’s the perfect time for a picnic!

Yabaï Sando opened in early spring this year, offering gourmet Japanese sandwiches that you can eat there or take away. Time to up your picnic game with some delicious new flavours…

With the summer in full effect, having lunch on some cool grass in a park somewhere is obviously an enticing option. Unfortunately though, supermarket take-out food is often disappointing, and knowing which boulangerie is good or bad can be tricky.

If you want to take your picninc to the next level, Yabaï Sando could be an interesting option! Sando is Japanese for a sandwich made with special containing more milk and butter than ordinary bread. Yabaï Sando actually uses a variety of breads, with five savoury sandwiches on offer (plus the ‘sando of the month’) with prices ranging from 10€ to an astonishing 23€ (for Wagyu beef).

And there are sweet sando too!

for our visit we decided to eat in – the restaurant has a handful of tables, and the room is tastefully and soberly decorated. However, the food seems very much orientated for take-away dining, with plastic trays, sides served in cardboard or plastic pots, etc. Not the pinnacle of chic.

We ordered an aubergine and miso sandwich, and another with smoked salmon with wakame in charcoal bread. We also ordered a couple of sides – edamame (soybeans) for one and fried chicken with a coriander sauce for the other.

The sandwichs did not disappoint (thank goodness!) with the word ‘delicious’ being repeated several times, but the salmon could have been a little more melt-in-the-mouth. The chicken was lovely and crispy though, and the coriander mayonnaise a big success.

To conclude our meal we decided to order a dessert each, but this isn’t a choice we would necessarily recommend. Our yuzu cheesecake was tiny (only slightly bigger than a teaspoon! and rather forgettable. The black sesame ball was miniature too 😕

We would advise you then to stick to the restaurant’s suggestion of a sandwich and drink for 16€ (or you can add a side for a total of 20€).

Or perhaps end your meal not with a dessert but with… a sandwich – a sweet sandwich! Choose between chocolate-hazelnut (sounds a lot like Nutella to us) or black sesame ice cream in charcoal bread.

Whatever you choose, we think you’ll find Yabaï Sando’s sandwiches a cut above the rest. Enjoy your picnic! 😀
