Linked with the Delacroix retrospective currently on at the Louvre, the Delacroix Museum – in the same part of town as our hotels – has just opened the exhibition Grappling with the Modern, the first to be dedicated to Delacroix’s paintings in the Saints-Anges chapel of the Saint-Sulpice church, also near to us!

The recent restoration of the huge Delacroix paintings in the Saint-Sulpice Church was such an important event, we wrote a whole article about it for the blog, almost exactly a year ago.

The three paintings – Jacob wrestling with the angel, Heliodorus Driven from the Temple, and Archangel Michael slaying the Demon date from 1861, and their restoration allowed new research to be conducted that contributed to the exhibition.

Specially lent works from French and foreign museums will show Delacroix’s influences for these huge works, together with a selection of paintings that they in turn inspired, including examples by Chagall, Gustave Moreau and Odilon Redon.
Around the exhibition there is a cycle of conferences explaining the secrets of the restoration, a documentary about the artist is being shown in the Louvre’s Auditorium on 18th April à 12.30pm (seats here), there’s a fresco workshop to do as a family on 26th & 27th May, as well as a walk to follow in Delacroix’s footsteps (map and info in PDF format here).
