Paris night…

We were lucky enough to visit the safes in the basement of the Credit Lyonnais in Paris before the great fire… The security guard knew all about the history of the place and told us that at the end of the 19th Century the banks were all near the opera house so that people could pick up their jewels before going, and put them back safely once the show was over. This is why the big banks’ safes were often very ornate and carefully decorated.
Some of this former splendour survives in the newly-renovated Credit Lyonnais,

but also at the nearby Societe Generale, an art deco masterpiece.

However times have changed. Nobody goes by the bank before seeing a film at one of the local cinemas, except perhaps to get some money from the sad little cash machines…

Not everything in Paris closes at night. The Hotels Paris Rive Gauche has a list of shops and places that could come in handy in the wee small hours…
