Photographing the heritage of Lebanon exhibition at the Arab World Institute until 4th January 2026

The Arab World Institute close to our hotels is changing the exhibition at the entrance to its museum, installing a new selection of photos from the Oriental Library of the Saint-Joseph University in Beirut, shots dating from between 1864 and 1970 showing the monuments and sites of Lebanon.

The historical sites of Lebanon are currently threatened by Israeli bombardments, and on a subject similar to the Institute’s other exhibition Treasures Saved from Gaza, the Arab World Institute now has another exhibiyion showing a selection of photos that have never been shown in France, taken from the collections of the Oriental Library of the Saint-Joseph University in Beirut.

In a variety of different formats and sizes, the photots show around a dozen sites and regions and feature not only monuments but also landscapes and scenes of everyday life. You’ll find them at the entrance to the Institute’s museum.

Also being shown for the first time is a large bronze sculpture (1.5m high) by artist Chaouki Choukini, and called Li Bayrut (For Beirut). The piece was commissioned in 2020 by Claude Lemand, who donated it to the Institute’s museum last year.

Two great new reasons to visit or revisit this not very well-known museum.
