David Claerbout – Spring, Slowly exhibition at the Orangerie, 12th March-9th June 2025

Inspired by the ultra-slow passage of time and its imperceptible effect on nature at any given moment, Belgian artist David Claerbout is showing his paintings at the Musée de l’Orangerie in an exhibition sweetly entitled Spring, Slowly.

In a painting, it’s impossible to show the long-term changes observed in a natural element. David Claerbout prefers video pieces to capture the tiny differences seen over the seasons, over the years, in a tree for example, but that doesn’t stop him from also creating paintings in which he tries to “paint the air which surrounds the bridge, the house, the boat. The beauty of the air in which these objects are located, and that is nothing short of impossible.

It’s an approach which is not so far removed from that of Monet – even the choice of bright, dense colour palette is similar – and as such it’s only logical that Claerbout’s work be shown not far from the large-scale, astonishing paintings that are the Waterlilies.

In both the artists’ works, you’ll be able to appreciate and compare the colours, evocation of movement and emotion frozen in time.
