Is that a Delacroix? The Art of Copying exhibition at the Delacroix Museum until 23rd June 2025

The Delacroix Museum, not far from our hotels, has a new exhibition explorant the stages of artistic creation, and asking the question of how we can differentiate an original work from a copy or reproduction, or are all works of art to some degree copies and reproductions?

Is that a Delacroix? The Art of Copying exhibition at the Delacroix Museum until 23rd June 2025

Telling fakes from the real deal isn’t always easy in art, nor is knowing exactly what makes a piece of art 100% ‘authentic’ – artists can reference others, copy or be inspired by other works, learn how to create from one artist and retain part of the tutor’s influence in their style…

Est-ce un Delacroix? L’art de la copie (Is that a Delacroix? The Art of Copying) at the Delacroix Museum explores the similitudes, deliberate or not, in works by the artist and those he inspired, with a different them for each room: Delacroix ? Apparences can be deceptive in Delacroix’s bedroom, D’après Delacroix in the living room, and Delacroix, not copied but copier in the dining room, with sketches and preparatory drawings shown in the workshop.

Is an artist’s signature sufficient to guarantee authenticity? If a benefactor commissions a painting on a certain theme, or a painting is made explicity to be sold in a show, is it 100% the artist’s work and vision?

The exhibition will attempt to address and answer some of these interrogations.
