Ikebana in the Heart of Winter exhibition (and two more) at the House of Japanese Culture, 14th-18th January 2025

Delicate and surprising Japanese Ikebana floral compositions make up a new free exhibition not far from our hotels at the Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris (House of Japanese Culture), but why for just five days?

Well, because after that there’s another exhibition (also free) of mini Ikebana from 21st-25th January, followed by a third exhibition, once again free, from 29th January – 1st February featuring Ikebana from the Ohara school, which put the emphasis on season qualities, the processes of natural growth and the beauty of natural environments.

It would seem the month of January is Ikebana month in Paris, and if you like unusual floral decorations, these three exhibitions might be of interest.

Organised by Ikebana International Paris at the la Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris, each exhibition explores a different aspect of Ikebana, a Japanese tradition dating back to around the 15th century. Each collection of flowers has its meaning, with carefully-constructed harmony, rhythm and colours.

The first exhibition, entitled Ikebana en plein hiver (Ikebana in the Heart of Winter), also exists in virtual form online here, but those physically attending can see an Ikebana demonstration on Saturday 18th January from 2-4pm (12€).

The second, Mini Ikebana – les cent petits (Mini Ikebana – the hundred small ones), is on exactly a week later, from 21st-25th January, also with a virtual version on offer online.

100 teeny Ikebana should be a sight to behold – mini minimalism!

And to finish off the month (and start off February), a final exhibition will explore Ikebana from the famed Ohara school founded at the end of the 19th century and now known for its ‘moribana’ style favouring a ‘landscape’ approach with wider, shallower pots.

The school is celebrating it 130th anniversary this year, with its students still learning how to observe nature closely in order to inspire their creations.

The exhibition is open from 28th January-1st February, and like the two others it is free to see!
