The Saint-Victor restaurant

With its modestly-sized main room, plus a covered and heated terrace, plus another large terrace outside, Le Saint-Victor offers plenty of space, comfort, different atmospheres to suit your mood and French bistrot cuisine with the occasional welcome Asian twist.

Not far from our hotels, just opposite the almost century-old art deco marvel that is the Maison de la Mutualité (and thus with a great view of the building), the Saint-Victor is one of the biggest bistrots in its neighbourhood, with a huge sun-drenched terrace that’s buzzing in the summer, and cosy rooms inside.

Open seven days a week, serving food all day, it’s a great choice if you are in a large group, with the family (there’s a kids menu at 12€), if you want to eat outside the usual hours (they are open until midnight) or if you want to perfect your tan while also having lunch 🥵

We decided to go down for dinner, just a few weeks before Christmas, to taste the food cooked on-site that they are proud of, in this warm setting.

To start our meal we ordered:

— a cucumber salad with garlic, sesame sauce and peanuts, slightly spicy, rather surprising and very agreeable, and

— aubergine spread served warm, with just the right dose of garlic, also with a hint of spice, and served with a soft-boiled egg cooked to perfection.

We enjoyed both starters, and for 7€ each they were very decently priced.

For the main dishes we chose:

— one of the dishes of the day, salmon kebabs with sorrel sauce and fried rice with vegetables. Both the fish and rice were cooked just right, and we could taste a few Asian spices that gave this classic French dish a little extra personality, and

— tuna tataki (that we requested well cooked) with a sesame seed crust (yum!), sweet soy sauce and wok-fried vegetables. The presentation was pretty, with perhaps a little too much sauce on the vegetables, but overall a success, in a large portion.

And to end our meal, one dessert for two, the dessert of the day – a chocolate tartelette with homemade whipped cream. No surprises here, but both elements were as good as we had hoped, very successful even, with the whipped cream light and very obviously fresh.

All in all, a rather lovely meal with smiley and efficient waiting staff in a cosy, comfortable setting.

If you are looking for a good, authentic Parisian bistrot not far from Notre-Dame, with well-prepared dishes and honest prices, why not try the Saint-Victor out!
