Just in time for the reopening of Notre-Dame, very close to our hotels, the Cluny Museum has a new exhibition of recently restored sculpted elements from the cathedral that are in its collections, as well as new fragments of a rood screen dating from around 1230 that were found during an archeological dig by Inrap (the National Institute of Preventive Archeological Research) in 2022, being shown to the public for the first time.

You may not know that a lot of original sculpted elements from Notre-Dame have actually been part of the Cluny Museum’s collections for many years. Many haven’t been studied since the 1980s, but this new exhibition – Stories in Stone – the Medieval Sculptures of Notre-Dame – shows the results of a new program of research and restoration launched in 2022.

However, the exhibition is not limited to just the museum’s own collection. Also presented for the first time are roughly thirty pieces found during digs conducted by the National Institute of Preventive Archeological Research in 2022, which have now been studied and restored.

In all, the exhibition presents around 120 works, together with loans from the Louvre and Carnavalet Museum chosen for their contextual importance.
