If you know Jackson Pollock’s majors works but not much about what got him to that pinnacle, the exhibition Jackson Pollock: the Early Years is for you.

With around 100 works on show, including loans from New York’s Metropolitan and MoMA, the Tate and the Pompidou Centre, you’ll be taken through the important moments in Pollock’s creative life, spotlighting the newness and force of his creations, not just in the world of painting, but also sculptures, engravings…

After an introductory room, the exhibition talks about Pollock’s arrival in New York in 1930 and the importance he placed in both Mexican street artists and the work of Picasso, two influences that would go on to be ‘remixed’ in his art.

The third room explores the New York art scene of the 1940s, Pollock’s struggle with alcoholism and his psychoanalytical drawings, with room 4 concentrating on the artist’s first solo exhibition, organised by Peggy Guggenheim in 1943, which understandably raised his profile.

Next, the fifth room show his large-format Accabonac Creek series (1945-46), with a final room introducing the transition towards the work he is most know for, including his pouring and dripping paintings.
