Get ready for what is probably the most important date in the Parisian calendar for the end of this year – after five years of work, Notre-Dame cathedral is reopening on 8th December 2024. We expect a lot of people to come visit, so make sure you book a room in one of our hotels before it’s too late!

And with just over two months before the momentous date, we take a look at this vast, incredible project.

What an incredible year it has been in Paris! The 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games finished just a few weeks ago, and now Notre-Dame cathedral is about to reopen, over five years since the terrible fire that gutted it in spring 2019.

If you’ve been following the work a little, you’ll know that hundreds of skilled workers have been drafted in to rebuild the cathedral exactly as it was, using the same techniques as when the building was constructed nearly 900 years ago.

Recent news includes the return of Gabriel, Anne-Geneviève, Denis, Marcel, Étienne, Benoit-Joseph, Maurice and Jean-Marie (the names of the bells in the north belfry!) and the slow removal of the scaffolding, allowing the roof to be more and more visible.

On one of the sides of the cathedral, the monumental stained glass window is clearly visible, as well as fresh new sculpted stone…

… and videos from the official site – Rebuild Notre-Dame de Paris – show us the interior, which will soon look better than it ever has.

We were lucky enough to go down to the site during Open House Weekend, and on the square in front of the building were numerous stalls explaining each skilled part of the restoration process, with demonstrations of woodcutting, stone sculpting, paintwork repairs, an exhibition of the metal parts of the rood (like the gargoyles)…

So, the reopening of Notre Dame is set for 8th December 2024, although not all work will be finished by that date.

The area around the building are going to be pedestrianised, and the facade of the cathedral (as you might imagine) are going to need a little cleaning. These final touches will be finished by the end of 2028, but in the meantime, don’t miss the chance to be one of the first to visit the interior of this incredible building.
