The Collections Have Their Own Soundtrack – the new sound trail at the Quai Branly Museum

Not far from our hotels, the amazing Quai Branly Museum is making its visiting experience new again by adding specially curated sounds, played at 120 different spots around the collection.

This interesting new venture is also being celebrated by three months of sound-related events – shows, concerts, performances, movies, talks and more.

If you have already been to the vast Quai Branly Museum, now is perhaps the time for a return visit and different experience. Three sound designers – Luc Martinez, Simon Cacheux and Julia Griner – have created sounds for the main collection, linked to the objects on show. Sometimes it’s a little music, sometimes field recordings, sometimes voices…

These sounds can often serve to add a missing element to a specific exhibit, like the noise an instrument makes or the ambiance of a ritual, or sounds can be more generally spread over an ear.

Musicologist Éric de Visscher, who has supervised the project, spent nearly four years perfecting and bringing the project to fruition. All the sounds are being used with the permission of those who created and/or recorded them.

For the next three months (until December 2024), an important cultural programme will be celebrating the new sound trail, with:

a Sunday family day on 20th October, with workshops, storytelling sessions, projections, guided visits, games…)
a film festival about tales and myths, suitable for children 3 years old and up (but will be in French)
six different shows (these require paid admission)
several talks and Q&As…

All the info about these events can be found here on the museum’s website, and French-speakers can download a PDF leaflet to accompany their visit here.

You can also see the permanent collections with a 17-step sound guide in English called Sonorama, available as a web app – a web page that you can save to you homescreen and then use as an app, without having to download anything.

Once you have tour headphones on, Sonorama will help you discover contemporary cultures from around the world. Click the image below to start your journey!
