The work of painter / sculptor Guy de Rougemont (1935-2021) is the subject of a new free exhibition at the arts school where he perfected his craft, the Académie des beaux-arts, close to our hotels.

Guy de Rougemont was not one to limit himself to one style or form of art, excelling in painting, sculpture (including his famous PVC columns from the 1970s) and even applying his talents to rugs.

He joined the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in 1954 to study painting, and his work was quickly met with success – at was at one of his early exhibitions in New York that de Rougemont was introduced to a certain Andy Warhol.

And after a number of years painting, the 1970s saw the artist starting to create cylinders covered with coloured and black stripes – a ‘colourful shambles’, as he called it.

The exhibition will show the evolution of the artist’s work, breaking it down into four main periods, with a final room acting as a sort of cabinet of curiosities that reveals some of Rougemont’s personal possessions, friendships and mementos.

You’ll find it exclusively at the bookstore of the Institut de France (the organisers of the exhibition) before the official publication date of 6th September 2024.
