Andres Serrano – Portraits of America exhibition at the Maillol Museum until 20th October 2024

Controversial artist Andres Serrano is the subject of the new exhibition at the Maillol Museum, super close to our hotels. His portraits of people in America throw a sharp light onto a country deeply divided by political extremism, poverty, indifference for indigenous peoples and the cult of celebrity.

With numerous series of photos and a career spanning four decades, Andres Serrano has stared the USA in the face and attempted to capture its contradictions and hypocrisy. Sometimes focused on New York where he grew up, other times exploring a trait found countrywide, his photos definitely provoke though.

With subjects like The Klan and Torture, or by juxtaposing a rapper with a politician on similar yellow-orange background, Serrano isn’t frightened to provoke a conversation, and nothing is taboo.

In addition to the fifteen series of photos on view, the exhibition dedicated one floor to presenting pieces from the museum’s permanent collection with photos by Serrano, in order to start a dialogue.
