Arts in France Under Charles VII exhibition at the Cluny Museum until 16th June 2024

Exploring the extraordinary artistic verve during the reign of Charles VII (1422-1461), this new exhibition at the Cluny Museum (very close to our hotels) is the first retrospective to look at this intermediary period which saw the emergence of a new style of art with Dutch and Italian influences.

Imagine yourself in France in 1420, during the pendant la Hundred Years’ War. Political instability is provoking mutations in the arts, with Flemish-style realism and a progressive distancing from the gothic. In many senses, it is the beginning of the Renaissance.

The exhibition Les arts en France sous Charles VII (1422-1461) (Arts in France Under Charles VII) attempts attempts to show the diversity of artistic production at the end of the 15th century during a particularly chaotic time of economic and politic instability.

With importants loans from the French National Library, the Louvre and other French museums, you’ll be able to admire paintings, sculptures, tapestries, stained glass windows and illuminated manuscripts, with notably a section entirely devoted to the important and very talented 15th-century painter and illuminator Jean Fouquet.

Linked with the exhibition, in addition to the standard guided visits:

— there are five conferences in French (L’ars nova dans le royaume de France à l’époque de Charles VII, Damoiselle au temps de Charles VII: hygiène et beauté…)

two concerts are programmed for the 2nd May and 8th June, and on the 23rd March you can enjoy a concert-conference entitled La musique à l’époque de Charles VII: Quand l’art sonore devient un instrument politique

— and on 26th May there’s a catwalk show Fashion and elegance under Charles VII from 3-5pm, featuring students from the École Duperré.
