Léonce Rosenberg’s Apartment exhibition at the Picasso Museum, 30th January – 19th May 2024

Léonce Rosenberg was a Parisian art dealer and gallery owner at the beginning of the 20th century, and was close with all the major artists of the time. For the housewarming of his luxury new apartment in 1929, the place was filled with paintings specifically conceived for the space, with one artist per room.

The Picasso Museum pays hommage to this exceptional man by bringing together many of the original works, in a new exhibition entitled Léonce Rosenberg’s Apartment. De Chirico, Ernst, Léger, Picabia…

It has to be said that Léonce Rosenberg’s apartment was your average accommodation. Next to the Trocadéro (close to the Eiffel Tower) at 75 rue de Longchamp in the 16th arrondissement, it was made up of eleven rooms spread over a very generous 360m², and conceived for entertaining, with the family rooms separate from the fumoir, main salon and grand entrance hall.

The embellishment of each room was assigned to a different artist, with both vintage and contemporary fixtures and fittings to accompany the paintings.

For example, De Chirico created a series of eleven paintings around the theme of gladiators for the entrance hall, Fernand Léger produced a range of paintings of the four seasons for a vestibule, Francis Picabia‘s Transparences could be found in the bedroom of Rosenberg’s wife, etc. etc.

The exhibition at the Picasso Museum presents and explains a selection of the works that adorned Rosenberg’s apartment, a unique collection of pictural works that many may know nothing about.
