The Cartier Foundation, near to our hotels, would like to introduce you to the work of architect Bijoy Jain, founder of Studio Mumbai in India, with creations made specially for the event.

OK, we’ll come clean – before writing this article we had never heard Bijoy Jain or seen any of his work, but his creations for the Breath of an Architect exhibition have us interested.

Based on the idea of silence, the exhibition gets inspiration from the Foundation’s iconic building by Jean Nouvel and transforms it into a space for dreaming and contemplation, with pieces on show made from stone, terracotta, bamboo, wood and even water.

It’s intended to be a physical and emotional experience, during which visitors can feel the silence resonating within themselves, because – yes – silence has a sound to it and connects all living beings (or so says the website). It’s the breath of life, and works on show were handmade to a rhythm dictated by this breath.

Two other artists interested in the concepts of calm and balance have been invited to show pieces in the exhibition – Turkish-born but now Danish ceramics artist Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye and the Chinese artist Hu Liu.

In the heart of one of Europe’s most bustling capital cities, Bijoy Jain’s carte blanche is a chillout session that will hopefully get your new year off to a peaceful start.

To explore the subject of the exhibition further, there are the usual guided visits on offer, but the Foundation’s webiste (fondationcartier.com) will also soon have a behind-the-scenes film for you to watch, and another film all about Bijoy Jain, by Bêka & Lemoine à (1h38″!) can be watched below.
