Photographer Kate Barry was the daughter of Jane Birkin and John Barry, and unfortunately died ten years ago after falling from her apartment window. She was 46.

In tandem with a new book showcasing her work, Quai de la Photo (not far from our hotels) has a free exhibition of her photos on offer that we recommend seeing.

Quai de la Photo is an unusual arts space that opened last summer. Moored on the Seine (or rather, solidly attached), the venue includes an exhibition space, boat tours, a restaurant, two bars and a specialised bookshop (you may remember that we went down to check the place out for you).

Hot on the heels of the two inaugural exhibitions, a new one has recently opened: Kate Barry – My Own Space, presents 80 photos of this little-known sensitive photographer, with a two-part presentation – the exhibition closes on 5th February 2024 and reopens two days later, presumably with a new selection of shots to see. You can thus go twice and see two different lots of photos.

Barry was known for her portaits, many of which were commissioned by the world of fashion, music and film, but the exhibition also spotlights her other work, including a series featuring chairs (sounds awful, but isn’t), some gorgeous landscapes (a subject that she started to explore from 2002 onwards) and a photo report made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Rungis market just outside Paris that supplies much of France and Europe with fresh produce and meat.

As well as being free to see, there are free guided visits of the exhibition available (in French) every day except Monday and Tuesday (when the venue is closed) at 12.30, 2.30, 4.30 and 6.30pm.
