While her popular success was limited during her lifetime, Berthe Morisot‘s art has found a lot more favour and appreciation recently.

Now, the Marmottan Museum (30 minutes from the Hotel & Spa la Belle Juliette) has a new exhibition organised in collaboration with London’s Dulwich Picture Gallery, showing how numerous 18th century influences came together in her work, including the influence of works by other artists of the period and the subjects depicted.

Like many female artists, importance of Berthe Morisot’s art has long been under-evaluated. With this new exhibition, Paris’ Marmottan Museum hope to reinforce her growing reputation as an artist.

Links are shown with her work and that of artists such as Antoine Watteau, François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste Perronneau and Jean-Honoré Fragonard. New research has also studied Morisot’s letters and notebooks, and press cuttings of the times have also been subject to new analysis.

With a chronological and thematic presentation that shows the painter’s importance in the impressionist movement (she exposed her work at seven of the eight majors exhibitions at the time), you will see many of her portraits and landscape work, as well as other paintings from the period that influenced her, or that she openly copied.

New light is thus shed on her work, hinting at what she could have continued to create had she not died suddenly at the age of 54.
