The Hotel & Spa la Belle Juliette has a new exhibition on offer, featuring the paintings of Vietnamese-born French doctor and artist Thi Tu Anh Mouchet.

Like many other ‘boat people’, Thi Tu Anh Mouchet fled Vietnam by sea with her family, arriving in France at the age of ten.

Her Vietnamese sensibility was thus enriched while she pursued her studies in Avignon, in an atmosphere, language and light very different from those of Saigon.

Following her father’s example, she studied medecine in Montpellier, and a doctorate, she moved to live and work in the 14th arrondissement of Paris.

Thi Tu Anh Mouchet drew and painted throughout her studies, learning her craft along the way and later studying live models at the Académie de La Grande Chaumière.

Open to all pictural themes and techniques, her profession as a doctor naturally drew her to portraiture and the depiction of human emotions. She was also able to express the mix of her two cultures.

In the exhibition Colours of Vietnam you’ll discover portraits of Vietnamese women in their daily environments, painted in the bright colours of Vietnam:

— the red of áo dài garments and the river of the north,
— the yellow of imperial palaces and sand-grown mangoes,
— the pink of sacred lotuses,
— the infinite green of paddy fields, and
— the immense blue of the ocean that borders the western edge of the Land of the Dragon
