Casa di Peppe, just minutes from our hotels, just keeps winning awards! It was recently voted the third best pizza restaurant in the world (Italy excluded), the best pizza in Europe (again, Italy excluded), and chef Peppe Cutraro was named Pizza Maker of the Year 2022, according to authoritative website 50TopPizza.

So, what does the best pizza in Europe taste like? We went down there to sample one or two…

As we said, Casa di Peppe has been winning prize after prize recently, which may explain why the place is full as early as 7pm, quite an unusual occurence for Paris!

If the interior looks familiar, that’s because we wrote about the restaurant’s previous incarnation as Maison Marie a few years ago. The owners may have changed, but the lighting and colour scheme are still the same and the terrace is still there, but some of the furniture has been modified and more ‘stuff’ has been added to the walls (mainly bottles).

It’s actually a fairly small space that gets full quickly, which explains why the waiting staff have a slightly difficult time getting across the room sometimes. Some of the Italian staff also don’t speak completely fluent French, which is not a problem but can lead to a few misunderstandings.

For one of the best pizza places on the planet, with a line outside even before they open, we were surprised to find that the menu was plastic-coated and a bit worn out! Perhaps this shows that, at heart, they are down-to-earth regular guys and gals.

We started with Arancini al tartufo, three balls of rice with truffle, fior di latte and taleggio cream – a speciality of Sicily. These were delightfully crunchy on the outside with little slices of truffle on the inside and a creamy touch, just the right size for a starter. A success.

Next, we couldn’t not order pizzas! There are a dozen or so on the menu, so we chose a vegetariana with melted parmesan, roasted tomato, fried aubergine, fior di latte, aubergine crisps, bell pepper fondue and basil.

The bread base was nicely risen, although quite soft (which is fine), and the tomato sauce was excellent, almost like a ratatouille, dribbled directly on top of the other ingreidients. We weren’t able to eat all the brea (there’s a lot) but very much enjoyed everything else.

Our second pizza was a piccante with spiniata piccante (spice Italian salami), fior di latte and preserved red onion, which added a slightly sweet touch. Again, the bread was a little too copious for us (perhaps because we had a starter?) but everything else was confidently and proficiently balanced.

We can thus confirm that the pizzas are a cut above some other restaurants! And at around 16€ / 17€ they are not particularly expensive.

And despite not really being hungry, we decided it was essential that we finish with a tiramisu. It turned out to be delectably wet and creamy, just the way we like it!

So after having dined at Casa di Peppe, we will remember their pretty awesome, reasonably-priced pizzas, quite possibly the best in Europe (“excluding Italy” – what an odd prize!)

And nothing seems capable of stopping the ascent of Peppe Cutraro (who is humble enough to have a giant neon sign of his name at the entrance to the restaurant). He has two restaurants in Paris and has just opened a third in the nearby suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt.
