The Palais Galliera, the fashion museum of the city of Paris, is opening what promises to be one of the most popular exhibitions of the autumn – Frida Kahlo, Beyond Appearances – which avoid the clichés surrounding the artist and explores how she constructed her identity through the way she presented and represented herself.

This is the first time that a French museum has organised an exhibition of this size about Frida Kahlo, and it includes over 200 objects taken from the house that she was born and brought up in: her letters, accessories, clothes, cosmetics, medication and even her medical prostheses.

These items have rarely been seen, as they were locked in a room for 50 years after Kahlo’s death.

You’ll be able to admire the artist’s traditional and ornate Tehuana dresses, her hand-painted corsets and prostheses, and the pre-Colombian necklaces that she collected, as well as photos and films of her everyday life.

Touching on both fashion and surrealist art, the thematic and biographical presentation illustrates how cultural heritage, handicap and being a woman influenced the image that Frida presented to the world.

If you visit before 31st December, a second pop-up exhibition is also on running, showing the influence that the artist had on contemporary fashion. Pieces by Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld and Alexander McQueen are presented together with others from Givenchy, Dior and Comme des Garçons.

Various events are organised around the exhibition, including:

— guided visits, including some in sign language, some for lip readers, one for the visually-impaired, and one for people with mental disability,

— a selection of workshops for all ages, including adults,

— a special Día de los muertos evening on 2nd November, for which you are invited to come dressed up accordingly and be ready for the “participative construction of an ‘altar for the dead’, the making of skeleton masks, family visits and female Mariachis”.
