If you like old school fairground rides and attractions, this is for you!

The Fairground Arts Museum (usually closed to the public) is specially open for the holiday for their annual Marvelous Festival (Festival du Merveilleux) with fairground attractions and rides, impromptu shows by jugglers and acrobats and an exhibition of unseen photos by French master Robert Doisneau on the theme of fairground life.

Here’s something you should make the most of ! The Musée des Arts Forains is generally only open by appointment, so this is the moment to see their unique collection, and marvel over some beautiful photos by Robert Doisneau that have never been exposed before, although they are now the subject of a two-book box set called Saltimbanques, available here at amazon.fr (39€).

A new documentary about Doisneau is also available on DVD, although you’ll need decent French to grasp what’s being said.

Admission to the museum gives you freedom to roam around the vast space, admire the attractions, ride on the rides and admire the spontaneous shows given by the fairground folk. Light snacks are also available if you’re feeling peckish.

The other good news is that e,trance prices are down this year. Time to take the family out for a treat!

The Festival du Merveilleux at the Musée des Arts Forains (here) continues until 2nd January 2017
