Announced a rather long seven years ago, the shimmering Gehry-like building of the Paris Philharmonic – designed by architect demigod Jean Nouvel – is being inaugurated on 15th January by president François Hollande (despite the fact the building won’t be fully finished until this summer) followed by an Open Weekend packed full of events, including concerts, visits, performances, workshops… We’re excited!

Here’s all the info.

We have to admit that we’re rather looking forward to seeing inside the Paris Philharmonic, or the Philharmonie de Paris as it’s known here, and sample its apparently incredible acoustics and advanced stage that places you in the heart of the music.

This weekend you can be among the first to see inside its incredible architecture, there are plenty of activities being organised to keep the kids busy, and adults have a couple of symphonic concerts to look forward to.

Meanwhile, what used to be called the ‘Cité de la Musique’ is now considered part of the Philharmonic, so if you’re used to going there for concerts, don’t be surprised if you can’t find them on the web any more – look for ‘Philharmonie 2’ instead!
As music is the proverbial universal language, the Philharmonic hopes to provide something for everyone, with special low prices at the weekend to make the events accessible to all. The line-up should be world class.

The upcoming season has quite a few highlights, including the David Bowie Is… exhibition starting 3rd March, Philip Glass’ take on La Belle et La Bête in February, an Indian weekend at the end of January…

Hopefully this new space will make Paris one of Europe’s greatest cities for music!
