Alabaster Tears,
the mourners of the tomb of John The Fearless
,
an exhibition at the Cluny Museum until 3rd June 2013

Ever since the Dijon Fine Arts Museum closed for renovation in 2010, the ornamental masterpieces by Jean de la Huerta and Antoine le Moiturier, the mourners of the tomb of John The Fearless, have been travelling around the world.

After the United States, Berlin and Bruges, they end their journey in Paris, at the Cluny Museum.

39 sculptures made in alabaster, lined up in one room of the museum, invite you to take part in the parade of mourners.

These figures are all part of the incredible tomb of John The Fearless, the 15th century Duke of Burgundy, and castings of them can be seen at the Cité de l’Architecture, but this is a unique occasion to see the originals in the capital.

The first press reports talk of a spectacular layout, with the sculptures hidden from view when you arrive, then being revealed as you enter, set against a black backdrop and cleverly but not too strongly lit. Should be impressive to see!
