A new Renoir and more acquisitions for the Musée d’Orsay

A Renoir hidden form public view since 1938, and only documented by an old photo, is now in the hands of the Musée d’Orsay, thanks to the French government’s acceptance in lieu scheme, after a member of the public used it to offset taxes.

But it’s not the only masterpiece that the museum has just acquired…

The Musée d’Orsay also seems very pleased to now have this piece by Maurice Denis, as up until now their collection contained no examples of the painter’s symbolist nudes.

An important (slightly spooky) painting by Paul-Élie Ranson has also just arrived…

…and another by Franz von Stuck, a piece that has played its role in art history by inspiring another painting by Kandinsky.
