an exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg
from 21st February – 21st July 2013

Moïshe Zakharovitch Chagalov (Marc Chagall) died as recently as 1985, aged 97, meaning that he experienced first hand a number of profound changes in Europe.

His experience of both war and peace, happiness and despair, being with someone and living lonely marked his work, as you’ll be able to discover in this important new exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg

His was a life of movement – Chagall left Russia for Berlin, then Paris, then the United States, before returning to France afte the end of the war. All his voyages and experiences contributed to the feeling of freedom and diversity in his work, and his style is immediately recognisable, often filled with characters that are half human, half animal. A dreamlike world that would sometimes act as his escape.

With over a hundred pieces on show, including loans from four major French museums, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Tretyakov State Gallery in Moscow and private collections, this is your chance to steep yoursefl in Chagall’s deeply personal world.
