Krung Thep, Tahi restaurant in Belleville in Paris

One of the best thai restaurants in Paris

You’d be amazed how many people do not go to restaurants for food. Many prefer their restaurant to be in the right location, or for the clientele to be posers and stars. Sometimes the decor is the main attraction, and sometimes it’s simply the fact that it’s ridiculously, eye-wateringly expensive.

The Krung Thep is none of these things. It is, however, one the most amazing Thai restaurants you’ll find in Paris.

Stepping into it, you might wonder if you’ve really made the right choice; hidden down a backstreet in Belleville (better known for its Chinese restaurants), the ceiling’s made of polystyrene, there’s practically no room to get between the tables, and you’ll most likely be sharing yours with someone else. But this is partly why we love it. There’s no pretension, everyone is so laid back that there’s a high chance the people at your table will chat with you (unheard of in Paris), and the food is absolutely incredible.

We started of by sharing a nest of deep-friend Thai vermicelli. They melt in your mouth, and are just a little sweet. A really spectacular starter not to be missed.

For the main course you may like to try fried pineapple and prawns served in a freshly cut pineapple half. Our other dish, Thai noodles with spicy prawns, was creamy, surprising and delicious. A lot of restaurants tend to tone down the flavours for Westerners, but at the Krung Thep you’ll be stunned by the flavours in each dish.

Desert however was a letdown: both the dishes we wanted were no longer on the menu, and we didn’t really fancy ice cream, so we asked for the check and left. Our two meals came to 40 euros altogether. A lot of Thai restaurants are much more expensive and not half as good.

Remember to ‘phone ahead to make sure you get a table, and don’t expect the waitresses to have great social skills (I think their French may be a bit basic). However, make sure your appetite is up before you go there. We never tire of going back, and they’ve never disappointed us.
