Proving that Rock ‘n’ Roll is art in the same way as paintings or sculpture, Patti Smith – now 61 years old – curates a Paris exhibition… about herself.



Punk’s Poet Laureate, daughter of a Jehovah’s Witness, born in Chicago, raised in New Jersey, fan of Rimbaud, friend of Robert Mapplethorpe, Allen Ginsberg, Michael Stipe, busker in Paris, painter, writer, performer, mother of son Jackson and daughter Jesse… Patti Smith certainly has lived. She can rock out, or recite poetry. It’s humbling.

Now, to the long list of her achievements, she’s adding ‘curator’. In March 2008, the Fondation Cartier will be dedicating an exhibition to her, her work since 1967, her influences, new installations, photographs, drawings, films… and of course, that voice.

A catalogue will also be published for the exhibition, and during its run the theme of the Fondation Cartier’s Soirées Nomades (performance based) will be decided by Patti Smith herself. The first, on 28th March, is dedicated to Virginia Woolfe.
